The Woodstock Artists Association and Museum kicks off their June 9th Benefit Splash with a keynote presentation by David A. Ross at 5 pm.  The event continues from 6 to 8 pm with food, wine, a silent auction, and a special sale of regional art ($100 per work). The event coincides with the exhibition Far & Wide, juried by Mr. Ross, which closes on
June 10.
David Ross on Colbert

Renowned writer and curator, David A. Ross is currently Chair of the MFA in Art Practice, The School of Visual Arts in New York City. Formerly he was Director, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, and Boston Institute of Contemporary Art.

Since 1971 when he was appointed the world’s first curator of video art by the director of the Everson Museum, Ross has been well known as an activist in the often conservative institutional art world and has fought for artists’ creative freedom throughout his career. While director at the Whitney, he was no stranger to controversy supporting such ground breaking exhibitions as “Black Male” and the infamous 1993 Biennial. Ross has always championed artists concerned with social change and those engaged in the use of new media. On the lighter side, Mr. Ross has also been the guest art expert on several occasions on the popular television comedy talk show The Colbert Report.

At WAAM Ross will be discussing Regionalism in Global Times. With the art world becoming increasingly international and decentralized, how has the role of regional art changed?

Following Mr. Ross’s talk, guests will enjoy delectable hors d’oeuvres, fine wine, and a Silent Auction of goods and services. Donated items for the auction include dinner for two at the Mohonk Mountain House, two tickets for opening night of The Producers at the Woodstock Playhouse, gym memberships for the Emerson Resort and Spa, wine baskets, fine crafts including ceramics and weavings, acupuncture treatments, and more.
