A Guide to 20 Top Artist Residencies and Retreats Across the United States

by Alanna Martinez, Chloe Wyma
Published: March 16, 2012

“The path to a successful art career can be a twisting one, but one commonly traveled route is the artist residency. There are hundreds of residencies out there, ranging from highly prestigious programs that are invitation-only — like those of Artpace, the Walker Art Center, or UCLA’s Hammer Museum, all of which mainly invite established artists to create fully funded projects — to more open, or even experimental, retreats.

Not all residencies are created equal, and while some may help you get a leg up in the art world, you may still have to pay for the opportunity. Programs can be grouped several ways: Some are fully funded without fees; some are partially funded with fees; some offer stipends/awards; still others are project/work based. There is even a thriving “alternative” category (stay tuned for a Part 2 of this series where we’ll look at some of the funkier options out there). Despite the wealth of programs in the United States, and a plethora of funding options, there are few user-friendly guides —  though Res Artis and the Alliance of Artist Communities online directories are valuable resources. Below, we assemble information on 20 programs that cover the spectrum, offering the most important information for each, including who is eligible, important alumni, pros, and cons.

2 Great Websites to Promote Your Art:

The Arts Map:

Jonathan Talbot, well-known collage artist and author of Collage: A New Approach and The Artist’s Marketing and Action Plan Workbook has developed a new website for artists and arts organizations.  He is currently (and temporarily) offering a year’s free membership.  In his words:

Hi,
I am excited to be able to tell you about http://www.TheArtsMap.com

After months of work, collage artist Robin Colodzin and I have launched http://www.theartsmap.com, an interactive worldwide map of artists, studios, arts organizations, museums, and more. The Arts Map allows users to search by location, medium, educational opportunities, type of organization, etc.

Clickable map markers on http://www.TheArtsMap.com provide detailed information about artists, their work, their studios, art galleries, museums, art schools, and arts organizations.  Most markers also contain and image and a link to a website or blog.

Map markers on http://www.TheArtsMap.com are user-generated. It takes just a few minutes to upload your location, information about your artwork or organization, and an image.

During the website’s start-up phase, 12-month listings on TheArtsMap.com are free. They will continue to be free for not-for-profit arts organizations and museums. Eventually we will charge artists a nominal annual fee which will range from $20 to zero, depending on the economy of the artist’s country of residence. We will also provide scholarship listings when appropriate.

You are invited to visit http://www.theartsmap.com and see how it works. To create your map marker, click on “create account.”

In order to receive your free 12-month listing you will need a “checkout code.”
Please use the checkout code: WAAM762B.

Robin and I hope you will put yourself, your studio, your artwork, and/or your organization “on the map.” We also hope you will pass along this information (including the checkout code) to as many of your colleagues as possible.

Cordially,

Jonathan Talbot

Hudson Valley Fine Art:

Local artist Grey Morris has established a site where you can choose various ways to showcase your work.He writes: “Hudson Valley Fine Art was started because there seemed to be a need for a clearing house for creative individuals to share their artwork. Also as a reaction to the increasingly hectic world we find ourselves living in.

More often than not, people these days want things ASAP. Much like the Slow Food movement, a group of artists have collectively come to the conclusion that art is not a commodity of instant gratification. The creative process is sometimes one of patient and deliberate gestation. How, then is art created? The seed of an idea is planted. The conditions are right for it to receive sunlight, water, air. It begins to sprout. Eventually, that concept takes concrete form.

These are the artists that are making a difference. This is the way they work in their studios.  This is a place to discuss what they are doing, to find out about others doing similar things. Finally, this is a forum to show the artwork that they create, for themselves and for all of us.”

Visit http://www.hudson-valley-fineart.com to sign up, or email greyivor@yahoo.com for more information.

WAAM’s figure drawing sessions are now being held the first and third Thursdays of each month, from 1:30 – 4 PM in the Towbin Wing.  Bring supplies.

Artists’ Salon:

Howard and Sue Goldson host a discussion/critique group for artists on the second Monday of every month, at 7 PM, at the Saugerties Senior Center, 207 Market Street in Saugerties.  Bring art to show, a topic to discuss, or just bring yourself…and interested friends.

SOS GRANTS available

SOS is is a grant available by a short application process from the NYFA, for up to $600. Applicants are NOT JUDGED ON THE QUALITY OF THEIR ART/CRAFT WORK.  You are not required to submit art images to apply for SOS.The stipend is designed to subsidize artist applicants who have ALREADY been offered a qualifying ONE-TIME OPPORTUNITY:e.g.

–an exhibit or art show
–an opportunity to mentor with a “significant mentor”
–professional fees and services, equipment to be used one time  for this opportunity,
–framing and other materials to be used for this one time opportunity.
–possibly travel and accommodation expenses for such an opportunity.
There are other examples;  inquire of the Garrison Art Center (info below).
This special opportunity must be expected to further your art  career,  and you will want to explain how.
Ulster Co. applicants must submit 7 copies of the application which is available from:

Garrison Art Center              Carinda Swann
23 Garrison Landing, PO Box 4
Garrison, NY 10524
info@garrisonartcenter.org

They are currently accepting applications (until 9/23/10) for opportunities from November 2010-January 2011.
Applications have to be submitted within the correct time frame before the opportunity.
It is too late to apply for a SOS for opportunities occurring prior to July 2010.
The application process is short.  You need a written proof of the opportunity, e.g. on a gallery or company letterhead stating the nature and date of the opportunity.

Some of the opportunities which WILL NOT QUALIFY (as far as I know):
any opportunity that is not a one time opportunity,
e.g. a class that is given every year,  or a seminar that will be given again,
or a show that recurs every year.
curatorial projects, anything that is ongoing,
or related to work currently in progress.
You are also required to send proof of residency.  I don’t know how this affects part time Ulster Co. residents.
